Pinyin and the four Mandarin tones

Learn how pinyin represents Mandarin sounds, why tones change meaning, and how to hear the first four tone shapes.

Pinyin is the sound map for Mandarin Chinese. It helps English speakers pronounce Chinese words before they can read many characters, but it is not a replacement for Hanzi. Use pinyin as scaffolding, then gradually remove it.

The same syllable can mean different things depending on tone. ma is not one sound. It can be , , , , or the neutral ma.

The tone shapes

  • First tone: high and level, like holding a steady note.
  • Second tone: rising, like asking a surprised question.
  • Third tone: low and dipping; in real speech it is often low rather than a dramatic valley.
  • Fourth tone: sharp falling, like a firm command.
  • Neutral tone: short and light.

Do not practice tones only in isolation. Practice them inside words and short sentences.
